Transport and Connections

Transport and Movement Plan

These proposals have taken the need for connected transport and active travel options to the heart of this development.

This will be provided in the following ways:

Accessible local amenities

The location of the development is in close proximity to Buntingford, which allows the opportunity for a significant number of journeys to be undertaken by active modes (i.e. walking and cycling).

What is more, the proposals will include a range of uses, such as employment, a local centre, and a First School, which will be accessible by these sustainable travel means through proposed active travel connections for both new residents and the existing residents of Buntingford.

New active travel infrastructure

High-quality active travel infrastructure is proposed that will link the proposals with Buntingford. West of the A10, this will include the introduction of a sustainable transport corridor along Baldock Road, with high-quality walking and cycling routes that will connect with the wider network being proposed. There is potential, east of the A10, to enhance existing active travel infrastructure to improve the pedestrian and cycling experience on Baldock Road towards Buntingford’s centre.

Maximising sustainable travel opportunities

It is proposed that a bus connection could be achieved by extending existing services currently connecting with Baldock Road. High-quality bus stops will be provided at regular intervals within the site to provide convenient connections for onward journeys. To further make active travel an attractive option, a mobility hub is also proposed at the local centre, which will allow for convenient and accessible interchange between public transport and active travel modes.

Creating connections to the town

Links will be made to the existing footbridge that crosses the A10 which connects with an existing Public Right of Way linking to Bowling Green Lane and Freman College. In addition, opportunities for further links will be explored where feasible.

Minimising impacts on the local road network

The site is located west of the A10, a key connection for longer-distance vehicle journeys between London and Cambridge. The proposals look to provide the infrastructure that makes sustainable modes an attractive choice for local journeys, maximising travel by sustainable modes, and so minimising the impact of vehicles on the local road network.
